The Montana High Tech Business Alliance has published five years of annual Montana Tech Companies to Watch lists covering 100+ businesses since 2017, and this year’s cohort continues a tradition of world-class innovators doing incredible work in Montana. (See also our Montana Startups to Watch 2022 list.) Whether using AI to help cupid’s arrow find its mark in online dating, sending space computers to the moon, or delivering a lasting vaccine for COVID-19, these companies are making an impact nationally and globally.
Since 2017, the Montana High Tech Business Alliance has published five years of annual Montana Tech Companies to Watch lists covering 100 businesses. While interviewing the six Montana Startups to Watch for our 6th installment in 2022, we were reminded why this series has been our highest-traffic content year after year. The annual list recognizes early stage high-tech and manufacturing companies with high potential to grow, create jobs in Montana, and impact the state’s economy. Montana startups are tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our time:
reducing greenhouse gases
building affordable housing
expanding access to mental healthcare
testing cannabis impairment
killing infectious diseases, and
helping small businesses leverage technology.
The majority of Montana’s tech industry has weathered the economic turbulence of 2020 without devastating fallout. The Montana High Tech Business Alliance has identified 10 startups that are finding opportunities amid the pandemic and are poised for growth in 2021.
Amid the economic turbulence of 2020, Montana’s biotechnology industry has risen to the unique challenges presented by COVID-19. Many companies have adjusted their labs and office routines to safely continue their work on cancer research, pain management solutions, or development of cell culture media. Others have capitalized on the opportunity to create technological solutions to the pandemic’s obstacles.
With more support for startups, it’s no wonder our 2019 list is up to 11 companies. We asked experts at Next Frontier Capital, Frontier Angels, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, MSU Blackstone LaunchPad, and UM Blackstone LaunchPad to nominate early-stage companies. Startups in Billings, Bozeman, Missoula, and Whitefish made the final cut.

We asked experts at Next Frontier Capital, Frontier Angels, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, MSU Blackstone LaunchPad, UM Blackstone LaunchPad, and Early Stage Montana to nominate fast-growing companies around Montana.
Fast-growing Montana tech firms expect to add more 1,200 new jobs in 2018, but some firms in the state already employ hundreds of people. In the final installment of our 2018 Companies to Watch series, the Montana High Tech Business Alliance has named the 25 top tech and manufacturing employers in the state for this year.
Many of the businesses highlighted in 2017, like onX in Missoula, Bridger Aerospace in Bozeman, PFL in Livingston, and GTUIT in Billings, have continued a steep trajectory of job growth and investment. Experts at Next Frontier Capital, Frontier Angels, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, Montana State University Blackstone LaunchPad, and University of Montana Blackstone LaunchPad helped us create this list of 12 fast-growing companies to watch in 2018.
